DUBLIN, Ohio — The Memorial Golf Tournament is teeing off in Ohio just weeks after the traffic incident at the PGA Championship in Kentucky involving pro-golfer Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler's charges have since been dropped, but after such a high-profile case, Dublin police have safety measures in place to make sure this year’s tournament is a safe one.

“In order to make sure that everyone is safe at our venue, we use an approach that entails high visibility of our officers,” said Deputy Chief Nick Tabernik.

Tabernik went on to explain officers will be visible at the gate, on the course, and in golf carts. Security personnel will join golfers for their safety as well.

Traffic is also a priority to the deputy chief.

“We want to ensure that everyone can get here safely, can get through the venue safely and then can get home safely,” said Deputy Chief Tabernik.

The traffic plan also involves other agencies, which Tabernik says is key when handling an event of this size.

“As far as on the grounds,” he explained, “we utilize our partnerships through all of our law enforcement partners to make sure that everyone is safe here. It’s a collaborative event between us, Franklin County, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the Highway Patrol. As we’re ensuring our safety, almost every single one of our officers works this event.”

It took months to prepare, but Tabernik says his officers are ready as ever.

“I have the good fortune of working with some of the most professional, well-trained, highly prepared officers in this state and probably in the nation, and that includes the partnerships that we utilize and all of our partners that help us ensure a safe and enjoyable event for everyone.”
