OHIO — Former president Donald Trump’s conviction is stirring strong opinions for people on both sides of the aisle. But as the political divide grows across the country, there is a push by some groups to help people better understand one another.
That is the mission of Braver Angels in Cincinnati. It suggests that people need to focus on listening and understanding the other side. That can lead to comprehending other people’s thoughts and feelings.
Finding something to agree on with someone who has a differing opinion is something that experts believe also helps.
“You're talking to the other side,” said Robyn Brands, co-chair of the Greater Cincinnati Alliance of Braver Angels. “You're learning. You're realizing that they have rationale. They're not evil. They're not trying to hurt you or the country or, and so it opens up dialog. It allows for opening dialog in the future.”
Experts believe it takes work from people on both sides to help bridge the gap, but they said this advice can help, especially when there are divisive issues like the Trump verdict.
