“During pregnancy, there’s a lot of support, anticipation, and once the baby is here, a lot of people think mom is just okay. In reality, mom is going through a whole lot,” Evert said.

That’s why she joined Mamahood, a group for moms who sometimes struggle with feeling lonely and need a village.

“In addition to (being) a mom, partner and a spouse, we’re juggling a lot of different things,” Evert said.

Mamahood was founded by Sarah Brody, who said she had a similar struggle.

“I looked around in my own first year as a mom. I personally was craving that opportunity to connect with others who were going through similar experiences at the same time and I couldn’t find it,” Brody said.

The group is for first-time moms in the first year of motherhood.

“Our mission is to support new and expecting mothers through that first year postpartum to help them feel less alone,” Brody said

The group meets once a week to help digest the previous seven days. They pick a high and low moment for each week to share with the group.

Brody said they invite vulnerable conversation. “We invite you to share openly what’s on your mind, heart, knowing this is a space where you’re not going to be judged and not have advice thrust at you.”

Evert said she’s really grateful for the support she’s gotten from the group and she’s making long-term friendships.

Her baby is about to turn one, so she’ll be leaving the group soon, but she’s feeling more supported and less alone.

“There is no right way to be a mother,” Evert said. “We have to tune in to what makes sense for us.”
