NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio — The Bureau of Criminal Investigations is investigating a shooting that happened in North Ridgeville on Wednesday involving North Ridgeville police officers and a man who was allegedly involved in the shooting death of his girlfriend in Tennessee.
Police say 41-year-old Jason Norris killed his girlfriend in White County, Tennessee and then took her car and drove to his grandmother’s house in Northeast Ohio. A license plate tracker was able to locate Norris’s whereabouts.
“We have a camera system called FLOCK and they’re basically able to tune into FLOCK and they were seeing a vehicle that was of interest in a homicide in their jurisdiction,” said Michael Freeman, Chief of North Ridgeville Police Department.
Freeman said that when officers found Norris, he and another man came out of the house. Freeman said officers gave commands, but then Norris fired at the officers. He said the two officers each shot one bullet, but only one hit Norris in the upper part of his body.
“He was medically treated by our officers until our (fire department) arrived where he was transported to St. John’s West Shore,” he said.
Norris was later pronounced dead at St. John’s Medical Center. Freeman expressed he believes his officers did what they were supposed to do.
“I’m most proud of the restraint that they showed they were put in harms way and they responded correctly as far as the number of shots fired, the medical aid that was rendered, getting BCI out here, so I’m very proud of the members of this agency,” he said.
The two officers have been placed on paid administrative leave as BCI continues their investigation. BCI said they are trying to determine if there is body camera footage that captured the incident.
