OHIO — Security breaches have been a big issue for several camera surveillance systems. And that was the case for the Ring, the security company that reached a $5 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission.

What You Need To Know

  •  Ring reached at $5 million settlement with the FTC for customers affected by a security breach

  • The FTC claimed Ring compromised its customers' privacy, and they failed to implement basic privacy

  • IT experts said having a strong password and secure Wi-Fi will help prevent this

According to the FTC, Ring compromised its customers’ privacy by allowing employees or contractors to access consumers’ private videos and they failed to implement basic privacy and security protections, the FTC alleged, and in some cases customers were vulnerable to break-ins because of it.

“They can just knock on the door or ring the bell,” said Jacques Bou Abdo, a University of Cincinnati IT professor. “What you’re going to see is a replayed video and you can just accept or open the door, unlock the door and you would just open the door and they pick whatever he wants to take and move on.”

But IT experts say there are things that people can do to prevent this. Having a strong password and secure Wi-Fi are two things experts said will help protect your privacy.
