NEW ALBANY, Ohio — Intel’s move to Ohio is reshaping the way communities are operating.

It’s even affecting hospitals, causing some to expand to meet the needs of a growing population.

Dr. Al Gora lives and breathes medicine.

“I was always interested in medicine. I had a mom that was a nurse,” he said.

He practices at Mount Carmel, but the job he knows and loves is changing.

Intel’s move to the area is bringing an influx of population, and with more people, there are more patients.

To meet the growing population, Mount Carmel is expanding its New Albany hospital by adding a new emergency department.

One doctor leading it is Gora himself.

“I think it was only a matter of time before the resources needed to be expanded to accommodate the growing community,” Gora said. “Intel has probably just accelerated that.”

The emergency department is a first in the facility’s history. It never had even an ER before.

The plans for the new department, Gora said, are extensive.

“We’re anticipating having eight beds to see the patients at least initially,” he said. “That can expand as a community requires. And those eight beds will be staffed by emergency department physicians. We will have access to most of what emergency departments have, so full-time lab 24/7 care, some advanced imaging, some access to specialty consultants as well.”

Gora is eager to start, but for now, renovations remain underway.

The new emergency department is on track to open this fall.
