  • Emily Manning is accomplishing a lifelong dream by becoming a doctor

Manning has wanted to be a doctor since she was a kid.

“Growing up, you know, I was the sole caretaker of my mom after she was disabled from a stroke,” she said.

Manning learned she will be heading to Boston to be a part of Massachusetts General Hospital’s internal medicine program. Taking care of someone isn’t something that’s new for her after she spent a lot of time taking care of her mom, something that started after a scary incident.

“We were driving, and she actually ended up suffering from a seizure and crashed our car into a parking lot and at that time, you know, it was definitely scary, we didn’t know what was going on," she said. "We thought she was seemingly healthy beforehand, but then we realized she was actually diagnosed HIV."

Manning’s mother died and wasn’t able to see her daughter on this special day. Manning, who is the first person in her family to graduate from high school, expressed that everything she has been through has helped her get to where she is today.

“It really did shape the lens in which I viewed life and even medicine, and it really inspired me to give back and kind of be that role model for others and just be a part of of somebody’s life,” she said.
