PARMA, Ohio — Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent for those who observe it.
St. Bridget of Kildare Parish in Parma is one of the many churches across the state that held “Ash Wednesday” masses. Attendees have ashes put on their head in the shape of a cross. The ashes represent the repentance for sins.
Ash Wednesday, which is one of the most important days for some Christians, marks the start of the season of Lent that lasts 40 days leading up to Easter. Many who observe the period give something up during that time, while others fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
