Jason Meade faces murder and reckless homicide charges in the 2020 shooting death of 23-year-old Casey Goodson Jr.

But instead of the defense continuing to present its case to the jury Thursday, Spectrum News 1 is learning the judge heard arguments from attorneys behind closed doors about some new evidence in the case.

The prosecution subpoenaed Christopher Corne to testify as a witness. Corne’s address on paperwork filed in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas matches Franklin Heating Cooling and Refrigeration. Prosecutors also subpoenaed the “custodian of records” for the HVAC business to testify in the trial.

To allow for due process and to help ensure a fair trial, the defense filed subpoenas upon learning about the new witness, to conduct a deposition of Corne before he takes the stand and also collect his GPS and employment records.

Spectrum News Legal Analyst Rory Riley-Topping said there must be a really good reason to introduce a new witness at this stage in the process and said Corne’s testimony is likely tied to that of an earlier witness who mentioned seeing an HVAC van in her testimony.

In addition to Corne, the defense also subpoenaed Goodson’s mother and her attorney and requested all e-mails they exchanged about Corne for the last six months.

The prosecution rested its case earlier this week, which leaves Corne’s expected testimony for its rebuttal after the defense finishes calling witnesses.

The trial is scheduled to resume Tuesday morning.
