MANSFIELD, Ohio- You may have wished for a white Christmas, but Ohio will be seeing a “warm Christmas" with highs in the 50s across the state.
What You Need To Know
- Cities across Ohio haven’t seen a lot of snow this winter season, which can be tough on ski resorts
- Snow Trails Ski Resort is fully equipped to create its own snow, but the conditions must be right
- Snow Trails is closed on Christmas day but open the rest of that week
It’s a challenge for ski resorts, but some people are still making their way to the slopes.
Nate Wolleson, Marketing Manager at Snow Trails Ski Resort in Mansfield says the sport requires snow and a lot of it. It’s something Ohio hasn’t seen much of.
Wolleson said it’s not the winter he hoped for, but Mother Nature isn’t stopping them from keeping the slopes open. The resort is equipped to make its own snow.
“As temperatures rise,” he said, “we make enough snow to last through the warmups.”
The snowmaking process is massive.
“All the snow guns are set throughout the resort,” Wolleson explained. “And so, when we turn on the pumps, we’re able to push a lot of water. We can use upwards of 60 million gallons of water in a given season. We’ll build up a deep base of snow, making it possible for everyone to come out.”
Making snow is one thing, but the conditions must be just right.
“That 29 degrees or lower with the ambient temperature and also the humidity, we look at lower humidity… that really helps us make a lot of snow and good quality,” he said.
It’s keeping the resort a winter wonderland and a place where memories are born.
“Seeing people making memories together with family and friends, that’s just something that we always pride ourselves on as being family owned and operated here. We’re the only resort of its kind of Ohio and so that’s really special to us.”
Snow Trails is closed on Christmas day but is open the rest of the week.
