CLEVELAND — Ohio hunters took more than 70,000 deer over the weeklong white-tailed deer gun hunting season, which concluded on Sunday.
According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, hunters checked 25,044 antlered deer and 45,074 antlerless deer, which includes does and button bucks.
The top 10 counties that totaled the most deer are:
- Coshocton (2,441)
- Tuscarawas (2,260)
- Ashtabula (2,189)
- Muskingum (2,076)
- Knox (1,880)
- Carroll (1,864)
- Guernsey (1,798)
- Washington (1,582)
- Licking (1,570)
- Harrison (1,533)
This year's total came in lower than last year's weeklong deer gun hunting season, in which hunters harvested more than 71,000 deer. The three-year average for the seven-day event is 71,322, according to ODNR.
ODNR said more than 389,000 deer permits have been issued through Sunday for this year. Nonresidents purchased 37,543 hunting licenses, ODNR said. Residents from certain states came to Ohio the most this year for deer hunting, including:
Pennsylvania (7,078 nonresident licenses), Michigan (4,733), West Virginia (3,560), North Carolina (3,105) and New York (2,852).
Hunters will also get a bonus gun weekend on Saturday, Dec. 16 and Sunday, Dec. 17.
