OHIO — This Saturday and Sunday is the youth hunting weekend in Ohio. Sarah Schott, with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, explained.

What You Need To Know

  • It is youth deer hunting weekend in Ohio this weekend

  • It gives anyone under the age of 17 with a hunting license and deer permit the weekend to hunt without adults also hunting

  • Any youth who wants to hunt has to be accompanied by an adult

  • There are other rules such as having to wear orange

“You can use firearms to hunt deer, but only the youth can this weekend. So, that is anybody under 18, so 17 and younger,” she said.

Schott broke down some rules of the youth hunting weekend, which includes any kid hunting has to be with an adult.

“Anybody over the age of 18 with a hunting license and their hunting certification completed, they have to be accompanying that youth for the entire weekend,” she said.

The youth hunters also need to have a hunting license and a deer permit. Schott said they also have to wear certain gear and they use certain types of guns.

“So, that might be a shotgun using a slug, which is a single projectile, or that can also be a straight wall rifle cartridge as well. They do have to wear orange, so that is a very, very important safety measure,” she said.

Schott explained that the point of the weekend is trying to make hunting a better experience for kids.

“Trying to give them an opportunity that is separate, you know, adults and things like that so that they can have a very positive experience with this,” she said.

Next week, deer gun season begins for those of all ages from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3.
