COLUMBUS, Ohio — On Election Day, voters are deciding the future of abortion rights in Ohio with Issue 1.

What You Need To Know

  • Issue 1 would amend the Ohio constitution to protect reproductive rights and abortion

  • Supporters include Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights and those against the issue include Protect Women Ohio

  • Ohio is the only state where voters are considering abortion this year

If it passes, Issue 1 would amend the Ohio constitution by adding the "right to reproductive freedom with protections for health and safety," including the option of abortion.

Supporters for the amendment include Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights, who said Ohioans should be free to make their own healthcare decisions without interference from politicians.

Those against Issue 1 include the group Protect Women Ohio and Gov. Mike DeWine, whose concerns include "broad" language in the proposed amendment and late-term abortions. Issue 1 would prohibit abortions once the fetus reaches "viability." Experts said because of federal laws prohibiting "partial-birth abortions," Ohio could not ever allow those late-term procedures in the state, regardless of what happens with Issue 1.

Ohio is the only state where voters are considering the issue of abortion this year.
