Now Springfield is discussing the issue on a local level. The city of Springfield has seen an influx of Haitian immigrants and, because of this, it has created a task force called the immigration accountability response team.

Community leaders hope to make all immigrants in the community feel included. Congressman Mike Turner (R-10th Congressional District) paid a visit to the city to announce the creation of the team.

The city says its goal is to create a culture that’s fair and respectful to everyone. The task force comprises first responders and other city officials who will ensure the Springfield community is both safe and supported.

The response team will educate the community about immigration rights, provide support to immigrants who are facing legal and social challenges, and collaborate with agencies across the state to help make sure there’s a coordinated response to immigration-related matters.

“Due to the significant increase in the immigrant population in our community, the response team seeks to investigate and understand. Are they brought into the community safely? If there are any immigrant exploitation issues regarding safe housing, safe employment and safe transportation,” said Springfield Vice Mayor Rob Rue.

One reason the task force was created is because city officials said the influx has provided a financial strain on the city and other resources.
