Ashley Max-Dixon, who goes by “Max,” is one of the models in the IL MODA Brands Mixer featuring a Curvy Show.
Dixon is originally from a place in Ohio with two stoplights. While she’s been modeling for 15 years, even for plus size brands said she’s “excited to see what Columbus' response is to see curves on the runway. I hope that it provides that inspiration and that permission for women that have maybe felt held back, that they weren't sure if they were ready for the runway here, that they are.”
That permission to be her authentic self is what she said she gained after spending her early years trying to hide her belly. It took a little while to get to that point.
“I was just nervous because I didn't know how it was going to be received,” she said. “Having a belly and plus size was not what society said was beautiful.”
Now, the pressure to conform or try to hide her plus-size body no longer exists.
“Yes, I am plus size and I look plus size and I have all of those curves; and I hope that this inspires them to show up next year for all the auditions. I hope that this gives them the permission that they felt like they needed from the city, that we want to be seen," she said.
In the meantime, owner and designer of Amber Nicole, Amber Hall, is excited about this year’s show, too. She designed bridal wear that Max will model. Being a part of the show has been years in the making.
“I've been wanting to participate in Fashion Week for so long and they've never had a plus size show. So, for me to be a plus designer and then to finally have a plus show, so I'm so excited to be a part of it,” Hall explained.
Max noted that just as she was given permission to be her authentic self, this show is giving Hall the ability to do the same as she now has permission to share her plus-size collection for the first time in Columbus.
The show kicks off at 7 p.m. and is being presented by BG Luxe and sponsored by Barroso de Padilla.
