DELAWARE, Ohio — Thousands of people are flocking to Delaware County for the Little Brown Jug Harness Horse Race.

What You Need To Know

  • Ron Burke, who’s a horse trainer, holds an impressive track record

  • The Little Brown Jug track is known as the “fastest half-mile” track in the world

It’s a thrill unlike any other for Ron Burke.

"I like winning. I like winning anything. Qualifiers, jugs, little races, big races. I like winning,” said Burke.

But he's not just any other trainer.

"I'm the biggest by far. I'm the leading trainer in the country the last 13 years."

Burke's job has taken him all over, including here to the Little Brown Jug, but he's always felt a need for speed.

“My father,” he said, “started doing this full-time when I was 12. We sold our car dealerships, and we started racing for a living. And since then, I knew this is what I wanted to do."

That dream has clearly paid off for him. From training winners of over $310 million and winning 14,000 times as a trainer himself, his track record is impressive.

"I have a lot of support,” Burke said. “And I have a big crew that works with me. So, you know, and this is one of our favorite places to come race every year."

As trainers like Burke bring speed, and a lot of it, Race Director Tom Wright is the man pulling it all together.

"The race was founded by my wife's grandfather. Then, her father had run the races and now myself,” said Wright.

The track is the fastest half-mile track in the entire world, so it's popular in its own right, and the people are what Wright said makes it so special.

"I always say it's the largest cocktail party of all my friends I've ever seen and some I've never met,” said Wright. “So, that makes it fun. It's the social aspect of it."

And of course, another big draw: the horses.

"I mean, the horse is the most important thing,” he said. “Without the horse, we don't have anything. And so, they are incredible athletes and they are their athletes, but yeah, it's pretty awesome."

The Little Brown Jug Harness Horse Race runs throughout the day on Sept. 21 this year.
