AUSTIN, Texas — Suspended Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Senate impeachment trial starts Tuesday, Sept. 5. Ahead of that, the University of Texas/Texas Politics Project polled registered Texas voters to see where they stand on Paxton.

The poll reveals that 47% of Texans think Paxton took actions that justify his removal from office. Eighteen percent said he did not.

Paxton fared better among Republicans, though most them said they are not sure at this point.

On the subject of if the Texas House was justified in impeaching Paxton, 50% of respondents thought it was, 17% thought it was not, and 33% held no opinion.

Texas Republicans remain divided on whether the House was justified in brining articles of impeachment against the attorney general. Twenty-eight percent said it was justified, 33% said it was not justified, and 39% declined to provide an opinion.

As for Paxton’s job approval rating, 27% of respondents approved of the job he has done as Texas’ top attorney and 46% said they don’t approve of it. This marked Paxton’s lowest job approval rating among 14 polls conducted since April 2021.

The poll was conducted Aug. 19-28 among 1,200 self-declared Texas voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 2.83%.
