AKRON, Ohio — In 2019, the Boy Scouts of America began to allow girls to join the Boy Scouts.

What You Need To Know

  • The Boy Scouts of America began letting girls join in 2019

  • A 13-year-old girl from North Canton has now climbed to the highest rank in the Boy Scouts
  • The Ohio teen is now the second youngest female in the country to achieve this rank

Since then, 13-year-old and North Canton resident, Isabella Hiser, has quickly climbed up to the highest rank in the organization.

Hiser is now the second youngest female in America to become an Eagle Scout.

“Especially as a girl, doing it when a lot of people still say this is just for guys,” Hiser said. “Girls love doing this, at least the girls I have met.”

To earn this title, Hiser had to complete a community project she did at The Akron Zoo.

She built a French drain for the zoo’s two Patagonian mara animals by converting an unused pool in their exhibit. This allows water to pass through the layers and filter to the drain without debris.

“They can also dig in,” Hiser said. “They can only dig to a certain point where there is yellow wood, which they can chew.”

Even though the teen has made it to the top of her organization, she said has no plans of quitting anytime soon.
