ASHTABULA, Ohio — A 3.6-magnitude earthquake happened Sunday night, and people in the Lake County and Ashtabula County region were able to feel it, but it’s not a feeling that they’re a stranger to.

What You Need To Know

  • There was an earthquake in the Lake County and Ashtabula County area Sunday night
  • There have been 57 recorded earthquakes in Ohio so far this year

Jeff Fox, a seismologist for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and his team put their first seismic monitor in Ashtabula County on Tuesday.

“It's a very geologically complex part of the state, part of the North American continent. There’s a lot of faults in this region that are activated from time to time from natural stresses in the earth,” he said.

Fox explained that there have been 57 recorded earthquakes in Ohio so far this year, and said he believes that about 25% of those were likely in the Lake County and Ashtabula County area.

“We’re monitoring very actively. We’ve had 4- and 5-magnitude earthquakes in this part of the state in the past,” he said.

There are other infrastructures, including a nuclear plant, in the area and if a higher magnitude earthquake occurred it could be dangerous. Fox explained that they are constantly looking at the area.

“We’re actively mapping faults, recording seismic swarms and activities as best we can so we’re kind of like ramping up the network. We’re putting in more instruments so that we can kinda tell where the smaller earthquakes are coming happening which might lead us to where the bigger ones might happen someday,” he said.

They have other seismic monitors in areas surrounding Ashtabula County to monitor potential earthquakes.
