MASSILLON, Ohio — Ohio high school football kicks off this weekend and the Massillon Tigers, the program with the most-ever wins in Ohio, will take on the Valdosta Wildcats, a team from Georgia that has the most all-time wins in the nation.
Rob Maylor, the president of the Massillon Football Boosters, said that this matchup has been a long time coming.
“The fact that we’re getting them here now is going to be unbelievable,” he said.
Former booster president and Massillon community member, Harry Haines, said the community is excited for this game and this season.
“Everybody rallies around the Massillon Tiger football program,” he said.
Haines explained that Massillon football is important to the town and that the community loves football season.
“Massillon football was born in 1894 and since then it has continually grown to encompass the entire city,” he said.
This is a big game for the Tigers, but the excitement around this game isn’t something new for the town. Maylor said he loves Friday nights in his city during football season.
“It’s the greatest place on the planet. I wouldn’t want to do anything else on a Friday but go to a Massillon football game,” he said.
The Valdosta Wildcats take on the Massillon Tigers at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium Friday night with kickoff at 7 p.m. The game is on Spectrum News 1 in Northeast Ohio, and channel 314 and the Spectrum News App for the rest of the state.
