CINCINNATI — On the same day Wimbledon crowned a new champion, a major national tennis tournament in Ohio saw a new winning team for the first time since 2016.
Andy and Thomas Lake defeated the six-time defending champs, Michael and Alex Wesbrooks, at Cincinnati Tennis Club. The Lakes are from Davie, Fla., and the Wesbrooks traveled from Houston to compete. The final score in the tight three set match: 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Lakes first played in the tournament nine years ago and were forced to sit out the past few years while Thomas was a student at West Point. He recently graduated from the military academy, and they decided to make one last push to win the tournament before Thomas heads to Oklahoma to begin his career as an Army officer.
“This is what we’ve been wanting for nine years, so this is really special for us,” Thomas Lake said.
“I’m super proud of him,” Andy Lake said.
His son has grown up during their time at the tournament, going from a boy to a man and from the follower to the leader on the court.
“Before, it was me directing traffic and now it’s sort of him directing traffic,” Andy Lake said.
In addition to taking the title in Ohio, they won their second national grass court father and son doubles title earlier this month in Massachusetts. They beat Michael and Elijah Noel from Bakersfield, California.
To win on grass and they had to save four match points in their semi-final victory against the Noels in Cincinnati, 6-7,6-2,7-6. The Noels ultimately finished in third place defeating Jason and Samuel Rubell from Miami Beach who finished fourth. Cincinnati Tennis Club president John Williams and his son Nicholas took fifth.
The club has hosted the event for 48 years. This year 31 teams from 14 states competed.
