AKRON, Ohio — It’s been about eight months since Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by eight Akron police officers following an attempted traffic stop and car chase.
While more than half a year has passed, a lot of questions surrounding the case remain unanswered.
Bobby DiCello, the attorney representing the Walker family, said they are currently waiting on the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to release its report.
“So, we are in a wait and see position hoping for a comprehensive, insightful, fair, investigation,” DiCello said. “We are worried, frankly, that the state will not seek indictment of the officers.”
DiCello said it’s not confirmed, but he’s heard that it is possible the Bureau of Criminal Investigation will release its findings this spring.
“There is a possibility of the investigation being disclosed around April,” he said. “We have also heard rumblings of the possibility that the case would go to what’s called the grand jury around that time.”
DiCello said although the Walker family is waiting for the report, they have been keeping busy. Most recently, Jayland’s mother Pam was invited to Washington D.C. by Congresswoman Emilia Sykes for the state of the union address.
“For the family it’s an unwanted opportunity to lead, to talk, to meet with new leadership in the government and to seek change, both at the city level and the national level,” DiCello said. “They are going to do that with me. We are not going to stop, it’s not going to happen. No matter what comes of the litigation stuff or what comes of the grand jury stuff.”
DiCello said it is normal for such a complex use of force case to take several months to investigate.
