Steve McGill is an English teacher and track head coach at Davidson Day School, a private school in Davidson.

“When I’m coaching is like I’m teaching on the track and when I’m helping with their writing, I’m coaching them in their writing,” McGill said.

For him, his job is as fulfilling as it gets.

“I like to help people find themselves and what’s best on themselves,” McGill said.

He’s shared with his students he is a Philadelphia Eagles fan.

“I always come in on a Monday after the Eagles win singing the Eagles fight song,” McGill said.

Last Friday, his students surprised him with a ceremony to announce he will be going to the Super Bowl.

“I’ll never forget it. I look at the top 10 moments of my life, that’s probably in the top two or three,” McGill said.

Two of his students led the online fundraiser and raised $8,700 with the help of community members.

“I feel a level of gratitude I can’t even express,” McGill said. “I feel a level of gratitude I can’t even express,” McGill said.

McGill was born and raised in Pennsylvania, and rooting for the Eagles is a family affair.

“I kind of grew up in it and never looked back. It’s part of my identity,” McGill said.

He never dreamed of going to a Super Bowl, but he’s looking forward to it now that’s a reality.

“I hope the Eagles get a W, really,” McGill said.

On a personal level, he said going to the big game is a way to honor his family members, including those who are no longer here and rooted for the Eagles all their lives.

“It means I represented my whole family and I can say we were all there,” McGill said.

Other than the Super Bowl ticket, the gift covers travel, food and hotel expenses.

Davidson Day School said in a statement: "This was a student-led initiative and it is a wonderful testament to the positive and meaningful impact Davidson Day faculty and staff have on the lives of our students and families."

The organizers are taking care of all the plans. McGill is leaving Sunday and returning Monday.
