AKRON, Ohio — Travel experts say January is the prime time to make "spring break" plans and start searching for the best airfare deals.

Spectrum News spoke with Ren Camacho, president and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport

Besides highlighting the airport's international flight options through American Airlines and United, Camacho focused on low-cost fares from Allegiant Air and Breeze Airways..

He also shared tips to help travelers avoid a hassle this spring, including the advantages of choosing a smaller, regional airport.

"It's just very easy," said Camacho. "From the moment you get to the airport — the parking lot, the car rental return, the ability to utilize our ground transportation services — are literally across the street from CAK, so you're steps from the door."

Here are a few guidelines and updates from CAK:

  1. Book early on, if possible, at least a month ahead of your trip
  2. Sign up for the Akron-Canton Airport’s weekly newsletter to receive the best deals from CAK
  3. Set up price alerts and trackers on apps like Hopper or Google Flights to see if the price drops
  4. Before you leave for the airport, check with your carrier for your flight status
  5. Know your luggage allowance ahead of time. Some carriers allow one free carry on, while others charge for a carry-on
