TOLEDO, Ohio — This was one of Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur's toughest races in quite a long time because of redistricting.

What You Need To Know

  • A key congressional race to watch was in Ohio’s 9th district

  • It was redrawn to include many Republican-leaning counties in the northwest part of the state, but Democrat incumbent Marcy Kaptur still secured a win

  • The AP reports she won roughly 56 to 43 against political newcomer Republican J.R. Majewski

She held her election night watch party at UAW Local 12 in her hometown of Toledo.

The Democrat has been in office 39 years, and she argues her experience and perseverance made her the ideal choice to continue to lead.

The newly redrawn 9th District is much different than it has been in the past. It now includes new counties in northwest Ohio that traditionally vote Republican, which made this is a closer race.

"For a district that was red in the last presidential election in the places that they drew in, thank you for showing the country that good government means everyone's included and there really is a big middle and we need to find it not just for our state, but for our country," she said during a speech to her supporters in Toledo. "God bless you. Thank you."

Prior to this election, Kaptur was the longest serving woman in the history of the U.S. House. She now holds that title for all of Congress.
