AKRON, Ohio — Jason and Stacy Alan have some tricks up their sleeves. The two have been married for 11 years and producing magic together for almost nine.
Their story started in Akron, OH.
“Jason was doing magic at a bar that I happened to be at,” Stacy Alan said.
Jason has been practicing magic since he was 13 years old. When they met, he was a solo magician at the time and Stacy a mental health therapist.
“I say that all the time, that it was fate,” Stacy Alan said. “Actually, Jason says that he's had me under a spell since we met. That's what he always says.”
Jason sealed the deal with a magic trick on a cruise ship while he was working in the Bahamas and moved in with 13 cases of magic books and lots of decks of cards. He then encouraged Stacy to become a mentalist.
“He introduced me to mentalism, which is just a branch of magic that uses psychology and the mind,” Stacy Alan said. “And we were both like, 'Oh, this is, this is perfect for me,' Because it just goes so well with my background, and added something new to his show.”
And then was born The Alans Live! — the husband and wife magician-mentalist duo.
“I never thought I would do magic for a living," Stacy Alan said. "It's still kind of weird to say that. That it’s my career and what I do, but I absolutely love it."
Although they said being partners in life and in business can have its challenges, they wouldn’t change it for the world.
“I get to do what I like," Jason Alan said. "And I get to do it with who I like,” Jason said.
The duo has performed shows across the nation, on cruise ships and even on the national stage, performing on the magic competition television show, Penn and Teller: Fool Us in 2020.
“That was pretty crazy," Stacy Alan said. "And I'm pretty proud of that. That was pretty cool."
Nearly a decade in, the duo's show was at its peak, until last year when Jason was diagnosed with stage 1 throat cancer and his lifelong career of magic went dark.
“It changed a lot of things," Jason Ala nsaid. "It changed everything. I am used to practicing magic, hours and hours a day. And I went for about three months without touching a deck of cards. And I could barely speak and I lost a lot of weight.”
With Stacy by his side, he got through it. It was a dark time now touched by light, he said, and he appreciates what he loves and who he loves more than ever.
“I’m excited to be back,” Jason Alan said. “I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to be on stage again.”
BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER
Together, they’ve fooled thousands of people across the nation and have even fooled each other.
“Jason, he uses a lot of humor, so of course he likes to pull a lot of pranks on me,” Stacy Alan said. “He thinks he can get away with it.”
They said if they can impress each other with their magic tricks; they feel good about bringing them to an audience.
“I don't even test drive her mentalism because she terrifies me,” Jason Alan said.
They’re a class act, aiming to bring Vegas level performances to the Midwest. They said, there’s nothing like putting on a show in the place where all the magic started.
“I wouldn't trade it for anything,” Stacy Alan said. “It's awesome that we get to do what we love and get to travel together and spend time together. I couldn't ask for anything better.”
The Alans perform at private parties and corporate events and also host local shows at The Metropolitan at the 9. This is their fourth season performing at the 9. Their first show back this season is Saturday, Oct. 15th.
“When you come to see our show, hopefully you'll get a view inside of what it's like living with both of us,” Jason Alan said. “The good and the bad. The idea we have is to show people what it's like to live with a magician and mentalist where the magician is incredibly messy. And the mentalist is able to keep us together and keep everything in place.”
