To register online, Ohio residents need to have the following:

  • Ohio driver’s license or Ohio identification card number
  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Address
  • Last four digits of Social Security number

Voters are then eligible to register online through the state's website with step-by-step guidance.

To register by mail, voters must print off the state form from the site, or the National Mail Voter Registration form available here, and fill it out. The form must be postmarked by the final day to register to vote in order to be eligible to vote in the upcoming election. Mailed in forms can be sent to the office of a county board of elections or the Secretary of State's Office.

Voters can also register in person at locations across the state. Forms can be asked for and completed at any of the following locations:

  • The office of the Secretary of State;
  • The office of any of the 88 county boards of elections;
  • The office of the registrar or any deputy registrar of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles;
  • Public libraries;
  • Public high schools or vocational schools;
  • County treasurers' offices; or
  • Offices of designated agencies, including:
    • The Department of Job and Family Services;
    • The Department of Health (including the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program);
    • The Department of Mental Health;
    • The Department of Developmental Disabilities;
    • Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities; or
    • The office of any state-assisted college or university responsible for providing assistance to students with disabilities.

Completed forms should then be delivered to the office of the Secretary of State or a county board of elections by the last day to register. All registration forms must be signed in Ohio.

If a voter has moved or changed addresses, a new registration form must be filled out and submitted. For change of address only, the secretary of state's office offers an online option. For name changes, a form must be filled out and submitted in person or by mail. Upon receiving the form, a notice will be sent out from the board alerting to the change made.

If incomplete, a notice will be sent for the information necessary to update the voting registration. If the valid form is postmarked by voter registration deadline then a regular ballot will be provided rather than provisional.

Registration can be updated during the 28 days immediately before, or on the day of, an election, but this may require a provisional ballot.
