OREGON, Ohio — The BP refinery near Toledo could be shut down for months following a deadly fire in September.

What You Need To Know

  • BP Refinery in Oregon, Ohio is shut down due to a September fire
  • The refinery is capable of producing up to 160,000 barrels of crude oil daily
  • The shutdown is affecting gas prices in Ohio and Great Lakes region

“It’s caused gas prices to make a pretty big jump up here," explained Patrick De Haan, head petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com. "Cleveland prices (are) up about 30 cents, call it 25 cents a gallon from a week ago."

De Haan said a bigger factor is a fire at another BP refinery in Indiana in August.

“I don’t expect once things go back to normal at the refinery in Indiana, that the Toledo refinery is really going to have much impact on prices," he said, but noted it could still be a contributing factor.

"There certainly could be more impacts down the road if gasoline supply cannot start increasing again.”

The cause of the Sept. 20 fire remains under investigation. Two employees, brothers Max and Ben Morrissey, died in the incident.
