Fiona’s mother, Bibi, is expected to give birth in mid-August, but there’s a possibility it could happen any day.
Cincinnati Zoo Senior Keeper Jenna Wingate has been taking care of Bibi during the pregnancy.
As of late, she said Bibi has stayed inside the pool. She said it’s an indicator that she’s getting closer to labor. Another sign is that Bibi isn’t eating much.
We’re cautiously waiting for the baby hippo’s arrival! After showing signs of restlessness on habitat this am, it became evident that Bibi wanted to be alone inside the hippo barn. She’s been in the indoor pools snacking, resting & getting comfortable. Stay tuned for more updates pic.twitter.com/zvJ8wXED49

Zoo personnel even noticed that she’s moving differently, as if she’s uncomfortable, or maybe even having contractions. Overall, though, Wingate said Bibi has been pretty calm and sleeping a lot.
“We are monitoring her,” said Wingate. “Of course we’re doing a 24-hour watch. We have volunteers helping at nights and keeps watching all day and overnight as well.”
Although the care team has noticed some signs leaning toward labor, Wingate said she doesn’t think it’s very eminent, but they are keeping their eyes on her and believe she’s getting closer.
