House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) arrived in Taiwan, which has raised tensions between the United States and China, who warned against the visit.

The official U.S. Department of State’s position on Taiwan states that the U.S. does not support Taiwan's independence but also expects differences between the island and the mainland to be handled peacefully.

However, it also states that the U.S. keeps the ability to resist any force that would jeopardise Taiwan’s “security, social or economic systems.”
