Ohio House and Senate Democrats had a press conference at the Statehouse to unveil six bills they said will support newborn babies and families.

Among the proposals, a push to eliminate the state’s diaper tax, create an infant formula tax credit, require insurance coverage of donor human milk, establish the Ohio Safe Sleep and Baby Box Program; create the Infant Nutrition Protection Act and enact the Ohio Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.

Ohio House Minority Leader Allison Russo, D-Upper Arlington, said the ideas will help ease the burden working families face every day.

“We learned today that we have got a surplus in the state budget in the billions, and we have got unused ARPA relief dollars that still have not gone out to our communities and families,” said Russo. “So we have the resources to do these things, to get these resources out to families who have very real needs right now. And the question is, why are we not doing it? Why have we not already been doing this?”

Russo said while Democrats are still figuring out the costs for the programs, the cost of doing nothing is a greater concern.

There is no word on Republican support for these proposals.
