CLEVELAND— Diamonds decorated Kaitlin Wang’s face.

“I’m getting dressed up for my solo dance,” Wang said.

She’ll wear a colorful costume that’s adorned with flowers to perform at the Cleveland Asian Festival this weekend.

What You Need To Know

  • The Cleveland Asian Festival is scheduled to run May 21-22 at Asia Plaza

  • Visitors will watch cultural performances, shop, eat and get free health screenings

  • Kaitlin Wang will perform a Chinese classical dance called Spring

“So my dance is called Spring,” Wang said. “In spring, there's like a lot of green and it shows the growth in nature from the winter to the spring. So, that's why I’m wearing green and a flower to represent how beautiful the scenery is in the spring.”

Wang practices Chinese classical dance with LingYun Rising Star Gymnastic Dance School.

“My dad was bringing me to her store one day, and we saw one of her advertisements, and my dad was like, ‘Wow, this is such a great opportunity,’” Wang said.

The dancer said she’s showcased her talents at the festival almost every year since she was 8 years old.

“It is a great honor to perform in front of a lot of people and share my passion for dance,” Wang said.

She’ll share the spotlight with vendors and exhibitors that represent the diversity of Ohio’s Asian community.

“It’s an amazing experience every year,” Wang said.

Wang said the experience allows her to connect with her heritage.

“These cultural dances have always been a part of China for thousands of years. So, when I’m dancing, I’m just like, ‘Wow, this is part of my heritage,’” Wang said.

In addition to seeing Wang perform, visitors will also have a chance to get free health screenings and taste traditional cuisines from more than 25 local restaurants.

The festival takes place in Asia Plaza and will to run through Sunday.
