CLEVELAND — If the weather is nice on the weekend, you will likely find Jordi Brunet Espuela on the beach with his family.

What You Need To Know

  • A Native from Spain, living in Cleveland is bringing a new sport to the region.

  • Beach Tennis combines traditional tennis, beach volleyball and badminton.

  • You can play for free with the group.

He is the club founder of Cleveland Beach Tennis.

Like the name implies, beach tennis is a cross between traditional tennis, badminton and beach volleyball.

“You play doubles, two on two,” Brunet Espuela said. “Basically, the ball cannot hit the ground, and it’s very fast paced of the sport.”

Brunet Espuela is originally from Barcelona, Spain, and he first learned about the sport while visiting Italy, which is home to some of the sport's top players.

“I just feel in love with it, and I couldn’t stop playing,” he said. “I said to my wife when we were moving back to America, I said 'OK, I need to bring this sport, I want to play.'”

That’s how he started the Cleveland Beach Tennis club.

“People I know here love beach volley,” he said. “Because of this hybrid I thought people would enjoy it.”

This sport is growing rapidly in popularity around the world, and Brunet Espuela explained it’s suitable for most people to play, even children.
