CHESTERLAND, Ohio — Clay Garrett is a 17-year-old, one-man assembly line. He’s been Turney’s Ace Hardware’s go-to grill builder for about the last two years.

What You Need To Know

  • Youth employment has helped a labor shortage felt across the country
  • Youth employment usually increases in April-July
  • Youth employment over that time had increased in 2021 compared to 2020

“Probably close to 700. This specific one, maybe 250-300," Garrett said when asked how many grills he's built in his tenure.

Levin hired him in 2020, and since the pandemic, young people have helped fill a void in job shortages. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states youth employment usually increases between April and July. Youth employment was up 3% last year.

Garrett said this isn’t just a job for him; it’s also helping him gain valuable skills for when he is older.

He’s built every grill that’s on display. After doing this enough times, he can simply eyeball it.

“I don’t use them," he said jokingly after looking at the directions.

General Manager Doug Levin said that’s why he assembles them faster than anyone else at the store.

“Somebody who is pretty handy who takes a grill home and puts it together can maybe put it together in an hour and a half two hours," Levin said.

And he doesn’t have to work at this pace.

“Why not build it as fast as I can as long as it will be built well?" Garrett said.

We had been timing him to see how long he could finish this.

“All done," Garrett said when installing the last part.

It turns out, he beat expectations after looking at the security footage.

“Just under 30 minutes," Levin said.

Levin said that there is a perk to hiring younger people, since they’re often eager to learn.

“We can train those people to do it our way or the right way. They’re not clouded about how something should be done," Levin said.
