MASS. - The American Red Cross is sending a plea out to donors nationwide, as its blood supply reaches its lowest level in 10 years.

According to the organization, the dangerously low blood supply levels have forced some hospitals to defer patients from major surgery, including organ transplants.

Jeff Hall, communications manager for American Red Cross of Massachusetts, said blood has an expiration date and they always need a constant supply. Hall said they've seen a down turn in donations since the pandemic began in March of 2020, and historically see less donations over the holidays and into the first weeks of January.

Hall said they have some catching up to do. Right now there is about a day to a day and a half supply on the shelf and they like to have over a three days supply for hospitals.

“If people have O negative blood or AB negative, we would encourage them especially to make a donation, but right now we see a need across the board in O positive, the universal receiver,” Hall said.  “Everything is important right now. We are just trying to get people in the door to make a donation."

Hall says a single donation can help up to three people. To make an appointment, you can visit redcross.org.
