AKRON, Ohio — Just outside of Akron, the Barberton Speedway is home to dozens of car races each year.

What You Need To Know

  • A 12-year-old girl is making a name for herself in the Akron racing scene
  • She drives a bandolero race car

  • She just finished her first season of racing

Some of the competitors who call this track home, like Lily Impellizzeri, aren’t even old enough to drive a car on the road.

A few months ago, the 12-year-old girl just became a Bandolero race car driver in the 12 years and older division.

"I started racing towards the end of July at Barberton Speedway," Lily said.

The Bandolero car has 30 horsepower and is designed for drivers as young as eight years old, according to U.S. Legend Cars.

The cars can go over 50 mph, depending on the race.

“I think it’s pretty cool," Lily said. "It’s kind of scary at the same time because you never know what is going to happen next."

Lily is one of the only girls in her age division who frequents the Barberton Speedway.

“All the others are boys and they are just slow,” she laughed.

She hasn’t been racing for a full season and she is already making a name for herself in the sport.

"Well, it actually feels pretty awesome that I'm doing pretty good,” she said.

Right now, during the off-season, her family is trying to gain sponsors to help get her car into tip-top shape.

Lily said she’s just getting started and doesn't see herself slowing down any time soon.

"I think it’s something I'm going to do for a long, long time," she said.
