FAIRFIELD, Ohio — Making it to the Special Olympics is a dream come true for many athletes.

And one Ohio high school student is living the dream by winning a state golf competition.

  • Matt was born with an intellectual disability, but it doesn't stop him from chasing his dreams

Fairfield High School senior Matt O'Bryan, 18, is the newest football team student manager.

O'Bryan is there to support the team and also help out when needed.

He's well-loved by the team and takes a lot of pride in his job.

“It feels good to be a part of the team,” said O'Bryan. “It’s a true pleasure.”

He's also known as the hype man for the student section.

But when O’Bryan isn’t on the football field, you’ll find him on the golf course. Golf has been his passion for a long time.

“I’ve been playing since I was little,” he said. “My grandpa actually taught me since I was five.”

O’Bryan was born with an intellectual disability. But that hasn’t stopped him from chasing his dreams.

He’s been on the Unified Golf League for three years now competing with his golf partner.

O’Bryan said he really enjoys “playing with partners mostly. It helps me focus better and play better.”

But what he looks forward to the most are the competitions.

This fall O'Bryan and his partner won a gold medal at the Special Olympics state golf tournament. This is the third year in a row.

“It’s been something I’ve been working really hard towards and it’s been one of my goals to win three medals,” he said.

And it doesn’t stop there.

O’Bryan said he wants to win even more tournaments in the future.

“Hopefully, we can get back at it again next year, win state and head out to nationals out in Orlando,” he said.
