CLEVELAND — Those in the Cleveland area, or those willing to take a drive, have a chance to see special works of art from Vincent van Gogh for free.

What You Need To Know

  • It's estimated there are 800 original works by Vincent van Gogh

  • The Cleveland Museum of Art is displaying four of the artist's works for free

  • The special exhibition will be on display until early December

The pieces currently are on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

William Robinson, the museum's senior curator of modern art, wants visitors to get up close and personal with the pieces.

“This is the kind of painting you really have to get close to appreciate," he said looking at the most colorful piece of the museum’s collection. "To see the brushstrokes, everything is so perfect, he’s such a genius, he’s such a master, everything seems perfectly in place and you get the sense of rolling rhythm.”

The museum has four works by Van Gogh that draw an international crowd.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have one of the greatest collections, not just in the United States, but around the world, people come here from everywhere to look at our collection,” Robinson said.

Immersive van Gogh is an exhibit making stops across the country, including in Cleveland and soon to be in Columbus. It uses technology to bring the artist's works to life.

While it's a unique experience, Robinson said there’s nothing like seeing the real thing.

"We want people to come and see his real works,” he said. “As you know, there’s a show of light projections and sounds, but it’s audio visual, so we have real van Gogh paintings, there’s a beautiful watercolor, there’s an etching. People can get a chance to see the real thing here.”
