AKRON, Ohio — An artist in northeast Ohio is trying to change the way you may view tattoo shops.
Erica Rose decked out her shop with inviting decorations and has a full staff of female employees.
Rose is the owner of Black Amethyst Tattoo Company in Akron and she said her shop is very different from others due to the tattoo industry being mostly dominated by men.
She opened the all-female run tattoo shop in 2016.
"Everyone who comes in, I want them to feel comfortable just being who they are and how they are," Rose said. "I worked at three shops before I opened my own and while I learned a lot from those places about things that I liked about them, I also learned about a lot of things I didn’t like.”
Rose explained that it’s important for women to have a space they can feel safe and comfortable while getting tattooed.
"Sometimes getting tattooed is really scary, and it's a really intimate experience, especially if you have to get somewhat undressed and I think it’s super nice here that it’s just all women," she said. “I feel like tattoos can be really empowering and really good for your self-esteem so it feels really nice to be able to give that to someone.”
Rose said one of her favorite parts of her job is helping to boost other women's confidence levels by turning their bodies into works of art.
"Girls will come in and be like, 'Oh I'm sorry, don’t look at this part of my leg. Oh sorry about this, sorry about that,' then they get a tattoo and they are like, 'Look at this, look at me — I'm never wearing pants again,'" she laughed. "It’s a good feeling."
People have responded well to Rose's mission, and she is already booked through the end of the year.
Her shops TikTok account has amassed nearly 60,000 followers.
"It feels silly to say this but it always makes me emotional," she said. "It's such a huge deal."
While Rose is not currently taking appointments, there are still appointments available with the other female tattoo artists at her shop, the Black Amethyst.
