OHIO — With seconds left of the men's 800m trials Monday night, Olympian Clayton Murphy sprinted across the finish line in first place, claiming a spot on Team USA.

Murphy, an Ohio native, finished with a time of 1:43.17, which is the fastest time recorded so far this year.

In the final 40m of the race, Murphy had been in fifth place. With one final push, having just sprained his hamstring a month back, he sprinted to first.

He'll be joined by Isaiah Jewett, who came in second with a personal best of 1:43.85, and Bryce Hoppel, who had a season best of 1:44.14.

However, the American record-holder and world champion Donovan Brazier will not be joining the team in Tokyo, who came in last with a time of 1:47.88.

“It’s disappointing to not have Donovan, but we’re sporting a pretty damn good team,” Murphy said in a post-race interview.

Murphy and Brazier were both on the Nike Oregon Project before it was dispelled in 2019. The Ohio Olympian continued to be coached by Lee LaBadie from the University of Akron.

Murphy revealed he's only run a total of 13 miles in the last eight days after straining his hamstring a month ago.

More Ohioans will be joining Murphy in Tokyo. Former Ohio State Buckeye Christina Clemons will be competing in the women's 100m hurdles after finishing third in the trials Sunday.

Hunter Armstrong, an Ohio State junior, will be competing in the 100m backstroke after finishing with a personal best of 52.48.

Ohio State junior Diego Cervantes along with fencing alumni Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger, Alanna Goldie and Eleanor Harvey have also qualified for Tokyo.

Cervantes will be representing Mexico at the games in the individual men's foil. He's been a member of the Mexican National Team since 2015, according to OSU. Blais Belanger, Goldie and Harvey will represent Canada.

The Tokyo Olympics start Friday, July 23.
