OHIO — Children's hospitals in the Buckeye State took some of the top slots in this year's Best Children's Hospital rankings

The list from U.S. News and World Report ranked Cincinnati Children's at No. 4 and Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus at No. 8 on its Honor Roll list, which highlights the top hospitals that give the highest level of care.  

On the Midwest list, Cincinnati Children's took the top slot and Nationwide Children's came in second. Cleveland Clinic Children's tied for third place. 

“Our Cleveland Clinic Children’s caregivers are committed to a shared sense of purpose for our youngest patients,” said Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Dr. Tom Mihaljevic said in a news release. “Year after year, our pediatric specialists yield patient outcomes that are among the best in the country. Even in the midst of a pandemic, they delivered high-quality, compassionate care.”

Not far behind was University Hospitals’ Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital which tied for ninth on the Midwest list and placed eighth on the top 50 hospitals for pediatric specialties. 

“We are proud to again be recognized as one of the best children’s hospitals in the country, as these rankings honor the highest quality and depth of services University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s has to offer,” Dr. Marlene Miller, UH’s pediatrician-in-chief and chair of the department of pediatrics at UH Rainbow, said in a news release.

Other Ohio hospitals to note are Akron Children's, which tied for 16th place in the Midwest, and Dayton Children's, which tied for 19th place in the Midwest.

Boston Children's is once again the No. 1 hospital for the eighth year in a row. 

The rankings compared 200 hospitals nationwide and based the placements off of 10 specialities: Cancer, cariology and heart surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery and urologydiabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital rankings in each specialty:

  • 3rd in cancer
  • 3rd in diabetes and endocrinology
  • 4th in pulmonology and lung surgery
  • 5th in gastroenterology and GI surgery
  • 5th in nephrology
  • 5th in neurology and neurosurgery
  • 5th in orthopedics
  • 8th in neonatology
  • 15th in cardiology and heart surgery

Nationwide Children's Hospital rankings in each specialty:

  • 6th in neurology and neurosurgery
  • 7th in pulmonology and lung surgery
  • 8th in cancer
  • 9th in nephrology
  • 9th in orthopedics
  • 11th in gastroenterology and GI surgery
  • 11th in urology
  • 12th in diabetes and endocrinology
  • 34th (tie) in cardiology and heart surgery
  • 43rd in neonatology
