SANDUSKY, Ohio — After a challenging year, Cedar Point is looking forward to a successful 2021 season now that the park is officially open. Officials say visitors can expect a celebration, along with a few COVID-19 related changes.
Cedar Point is a staple in Sandusky and a special place filled with memories for many Ohioans, including Carrie Boldman, Cedar Point's general manager.
“I was probably 3 years old when I first visited Cedar Point, and I remember it. I used to visit with my grandmother and ride rides with her,” Boldman says.
Boldman went from visiting Cedar Point as a child to becoming a seasonal associate to now being the amusement park's general manager.
“I always say, 'If you're doing what you love to do, everything else gets easier,'” Boldman says.
She’s the first woman to hold the position in the park's 150 year history.
“Coming back to have a career here and now being the GM, it's just really icing on the cake... and I think you know it inspires all young people and especially girls that, you know, reach for those dreams because I started here as a six-year seasonal (employee) and now here I am,” Boldman says.
Boldman says taking on the role during the coronavirus pandemic doesn’t come without it’s challenges. Last season, the park’s opening was delayed due to the pandemic, causing Cedar Point to see many fewer visitors, and the park didn’t put on a 150th anniversary celebration. Boldman says that’ll happen this season.
“We did have a little disruption, but we're bouncing back to share and can't wait to get started,” Boldman says.
Boldman says she believes Cedar Point will have a safe and successful season with the help of safety protocols such as health screen questionnaires at entry, social distancing, and required face coverings while in indoor spaces.
“My hope is that people come out and have a good time and get some fresh air this summer and enjoy Cedar Point. We can't wait to see them,” she says.
