AKRON, Ohio — Americans produce almost five pounds of trash per person each day, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

What You Need To Know

  • An Ohio native is traveling the country to pick up trash

  • She is raising funds via social media

  • More than 100 bags of litter have been picked up so far

Much of this trash ends up in landfills or in nature. Stefani Shamrowicz, 24, is on a mission to help eliminate some of that litter.

She is traveling across the country collecting litter and trash. The Ohio native has already picked up trash in nearly a dozen cities in under a month.

Her followers on social media pay $10 to have a bag of trash picked up in their name.

“To fund the trip, I started a GoFundMe to help me pay for trash and accommodations," Shamrowicz said. "It really just kind of took off.”

So far, she’s collected more than 110 of bags of trash.

Each garbage bag has a different donor's name written on it with a sharpie. She then takes a picture of the bag and posts it to her Instagram account, so her followers can see who has donated.

All the money she raises goes to funding this project, which she is doing solo.

“I want to empower women especially and show them you can do something like this, especially being safe and setting boundaries," Shamrowicz explained. "That’s been another element: To show women we are also capable of traveling the country solo and killing it.”

Her goal is to pick up 200 bags of trash by the end of the month.

“I know I can’t solve the whole litter issue," she said. "I wasn’t expecting to see as much (trash) as I have.”

She hopes by doing documenting her journey online she will raise awareness about the amount of litter in our environment.

"Keep spreading the love and keep spreading positivity," said Shamrowicz. "We can chip away at this environmental problem slowly.”
