Mental Health America of Ohio is an affiliate and representatives said that any effort an organization or person makes toward ending the stigma around mental health can be extremely helpful.

“When you have people that are prominent, and you respect them," said Mental Health America of Ohio's executive director, Kenton Beachy, "and they’re talking about mental health as just a normal part of daily life, then it just becomes more acceptable to think about it and to realize 'it’s not just me.'”

Anyone experiencing any type of mental health concerns, may take tests on Mental Health America’s website.

They can screen for anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, substance abuse and more.

“They’re not diagnostic tools, but they show common factors that would lead one to understand they’re at risk," said Beachy.

Beachy said because of these screenings, people can get a closer look at how much the pandemic is affecting others mentally.

"The total number of screenings in 2020 were two-and-a-half times more than the average number of screenings over the last 5 years,” Beachy said.

The number one screening taken during the pandemic has been anxiety.

In the five years before the pandemic, 14% of tests taken were for anxiety. In 2020, it rose to 21%.

Beachy said eating disorder and PTSD tests also increased.
