HAMILTION, Ohio — Two sisters in southeast Ohio are working as a team to take their vocal talents to the next level, and inspire others to do the same.

What You Need To Know

  • The two sisters became the known as The Cunningham Sisters

  • They come from a long line of musicians and started singing in church

  • The two hope to write and record their own music

  • They recently auditioned to be on The Voice

For Macie Cunningham, 15, and Marie Cunningham, 13, anything can be a song.

“If I think of a line or an encouraging quote or anything, I put it in that box,” said Marie.

From a box, to a notebook, to a beat with their voices, they’ve been singing and song writing every chance they could get.

“When I hear music, it’s just like a sweet and it’s warm and it’s basically like a beautiful summer day, that’s what it feels like really,” said Macie.

“With me it’s like a hug, music is hugging me and I just love the way it feels,” said Marie.

They said they first got that feeling when they were much younger, grade schoolers, singing in church and still trying to find their voice.

Their parents said their talent came from a long line of musicians in the family.

“My grandfather, he’s known for having a guitar in his hand,” said Marc Cunningham, their father.

Their dad, a DJ, has been known to take to the mic too, and it wasn’t long before their parents noticed something starting with Macie.

“One time that really stands out was her singing in the bathtub, and I told my husband, I’m like, ‘whoa, she can really sing,’” said Tara Cunningham, their mother.

“I’m like, ‘wow, she really sounds good,’” Marc said. “And I had to ask myself, ‘is this just because I’m her father, am I being biased?’”

But when her younger sister Marie learned to sing, and they teamed up to start making duets, it wasn't just their parents who took notice.

“The first time we sang together was at the Apollo Kids talent show, and we won that,” said Marie.

“So then, we started making music videos and stuff, we started to post singing videos together, and we’d sing in our churches and people would ask us to come sing,” said Macie.

The two became known on stage as The Cunningham Sisters and most recently auditioned for the reality singing show The Voice.

Inspired by their trials, faith, and family jam sessions, the girls said they hope one day to make their own album and continue to write and sing, so they can be the ones to inspire the next singer.

“We’re just going to keep giving out love through our voices,” said Macie.
