CINCINNATI, Ohio—It’s a historic day for our country. And local businesses are sharing their American pride. Buckabee Brownies in Cincinnati is one of them.

What You Need To Know

  • Buckabee Brownies was started two years ago by husband and wife duo Tom Kahan and Miriam Spitz

  • Kahan is from Israel and became an American citizen a year ago

  • Kahan believes it's important to show their patriotism which is why they make red, white and blueberry blondies for every American holiday including the inauguration

When you walk into Buckabee Brownies, the smell of fresh baked brownies is all-consuming. Husband and wife duo Tom Kahan and Miriam Spitz knew they wanted to build their own business, and brownies just fit the bill.

“One day Miriam made some brownies for a party and a recipe that she got from her mom and the responses were so amazing," Kahan. "And then all of sudden it’s like it all clicked together- Brownies, yeah!”

Kahan is originally from Israel. He met his wife there and they made their way back to her hometown of Cincinnati. Which has served as the perfect fit for their business.

“The response that we’ve had from the community from people that have come in and people that keep coming in day in and day out, every week, it’s just amazing," Kahan said.

“We love the community here, it’s really home," Spitz said. "And everyone makes us feel at home. We wound’s have survived this pandemic had it not been for the local pandemic.”

Now the couple, almost two years into their business venture, have it down pat- from the brownie flavors to the special brownie boxes.

“Yeah so I do all the baking and my husband does all the cutting and everything else we do together," Spitz said.

And when they were thinking of flavors- they wanted to pay tribute to the country they moved to and love so much

“It’s not a political statement, it’s just an American statement," Kahan said. "We want people to know we love this country and we want to share it with everyone else.”

So every American holiday- Memorial Day, Labor Day, the Fourth of July and even the inauguration, the special red, white and blueberry recipe comes back.

“This one, the red, white and blueberry, I just love it," Spitz said. "It’s the base of our raspberry white chocolate that we use and then we add the blueberries for the more patriotic feel.”

For Kahan, he says it’s a privilege to live in the U.S.

“Brownies are an American treat, it’s an American invention and that’s why we think it’s a perfect match for the inauguration and really any American holiday," he said.

So the special recipe for the patriotic blondies comes out-

“Now this is the fun part, putting on all the blueberries," Spitz said.

To celebrate the freedom of voting in a new president

And celebrating that freedom with fresh baked brownies.
