LANCASTER, Ohio — Sara Kallenberg’s most recent project isn’t just helping her progress through Girl Scouts — it’s also contributing to the Lancaster area.
“It’s important to me and it makes me feel like I did something good for the community,” said Kallenberg.
Her “Blessing Box” is a recent addition to one of the area’s lower income neighborhoods. It’s a structure she made herself and filled with non-perishable goods.
“Just seeing the homeless people on the roads, so there was clearly a need for homeless people.”
The project is twofold as Sara’s main goal is really to spread the word about the “Blessing Box” to different organizations. It’s something her mother Thea has been very encouraging of.
“This one was a lot more hands on. It took a lot more time. She had to talk with others about it, it wasn’t so much just talking in a group of young girls, it was talking with adults which is challenging for a young teen.”
But the friendly phone calls are paying off as community members are donating items for the first Blessing Box and are looking forward to the installation of a second one.
“The goal is to just keep it sustainable and keep it going even after I'm done with Girl Scouts or done with the project so people can use it continuously for multiple years and we can just help a lot of people.”
