CINCINNATI — Public schools in Ohio are the backbone to many communities, and now, many school districts have been given the ultimate honor of best public schools in the state. 

​​A new survey came out on Monday ranking the best public schools in the state. Indian Hill School District outside of Cincinnati ranked No. 1. The ranking is based on state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, teacher quality and high school ratings.

For Amy Campa, teaching second grade students in Indian Hill is a passion.

“Often times, they teach me as much as I teach them," she said. "Because the way that they approach a problem or a strategy in reading may not always be the way that I had anticipated. So, they keep me on my toes.”

But to be able to teach and send her own children to what was just ranked as the best public school district in the state is something she says is a tremendous blessing.

“I feel very lucky that I am in a place where I get to send my kids every day and know that they are getting the best education possible," Campa said.

Niche has named Indian Hill is not only the best public school district in the state—it's also No. 7 in the nation.

“It’s just an honor for someone to recognize us holistically, that our culture is something deserving of this type of honor," said Superintendent Kirk Koennecke.

Southwest Ohio has four school districts in the top five: Wyoming City Schools at No. 3, Mason City Schools at No.4 and Oakwood City School District out of Dayton is No. 5. Solon City School District out of Cleveland rounds out the top five at No. 2. In Central Ohio, the top districts are Dublin, New Albany, Olentangy, Bexley and Grandview. In Northeast Ohio, the top districts include Solon, Beachwood, Hudson, Bay Village and Rocky River. Mason, the largest school district in the state with more than 10,000 students, also ranked No. 5 for best athletes in the state.

“That’s because of our athletic program being very comprehensive," Jonathan Cooper the superintendent at Mason City schools said. "We try to make sure all of our students are included in finding their passion.”

For leaders in the school districts, they say it’s wonderful to see so many school districts well represented in Southwest Ohio as well as in the national ranking.

“I think Ohio was represented very well and I think it speaks to the value of public education in Ohio," Koennecke said.

“Mason is ranked in the top four, and that’s wonderful, and we love that, but we hope that we’re able to set models that inspire others and support other kids in other districts as well," Cooper said.

And for Campa back in her second grade classroom, teaching young minds in a school district she calls home is something she will always be proud of.

“I’m proud to work with people that are so dedicated from administrators to teachers to staff that put everything they have into making our district what it is," Campa said.
