CLEVELAND — The first day of early voting is underway in Ohio.

So far, a record number of more than 300,000 absentee ballot applications have been filed this year at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

With that in mind, officials didn't quite expect this many people to show up early on the first day.

The director of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections says in the first hour Tuesday morning, 192 people voted inside, which he says is pretty good, especially since there are only half the normal amount of checking stations open to keep in line with social distancing.

"Not on day one. No. This is something you see more so kind of towards the final week of early in-person voting cycle. Not on day one," said Director Tony Perlatti. "But we're happy they're here. We'll take it, and we'll take it every day if they want to keep showing up."

The office opened at 8 a.m., and quickly, the line of people started to grow. Some voters said with everything going on, they wanted to make it a priority to vote.

"One, I wanted to make sure I voted. That's a must. And two, again, I had to be here to vote," said LeMoyne Nesbitt, a Cuyahoga County resident.

Social distancing X's are in place to keep voters six-feet apart and face coverings must be worn in order to keep this a safe voting location.

"The world has changed so much in what is going on, and I wanted to make sure my vote was counted. This is the way I know it will be so I ... got up early and came down here to do so," said Barbara Wiedemann, a Cuyahoga County resident.

On Monday, Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced that Board of Elections officials across Ohio can have more than one absentee ballot box. The plan here is to add a second temporary drop off box on Oct. 13 that's open during the same hours as early voting.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections polls will be open until 5 p.m. Tuesday.
