  • Officers throughout the state of Ohio attended the funeral

"I'm honored to be here on behalf of the United States Department of Justice," said Attorney General William Barr.

Barr came to Cleveland to honor the fallen detective. Skernivitz had just become a sworn officer of "Operation Legend" during the week he died in the line of duty. Operation Legend is a federal initiative aimed at combating violent crime in Cleveland and several other cities. Barr took time to acknowledge the Skernivitz family and praise the detective's commitment to "protect and serve."

"I didn't know Jim personally, but in a sense, I do know Jim. I know him well because I know the strength of character, the decency courage and the commitment, which although too uncommon in society generally, are common virtues in the ranks of America's police," said Barr.

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams highlighted the dozens of awards and accolades Skernivitz garnered. Chief Williams referred to Skernivitz as a "policeman's policeman."

"He was a consummate team player. In evaluations of jimmy over the years, you'll see another constant theme: he was a team player. Volunteered for assignments. Always. Always willing to help," said Williams.

Williams said Skernivitz will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, but that his memory and mark on the community will live on forever.

"What he did out there for our city was to try to lift not individuals, not neighborhoods, not groups, but an entire city to higher, more noble life. Badge number 2249 will always live in the hearts and minds of the people in this city and his brothers and sisters in the division of police," said Williams.

The Cleveland Police Foundation is now working to raise money for the Skernivitz family through its Heroes Fund.
